The Interborough Express (IBX) is a transformative transit project designed to better connect Brooklyn and Queens. The proposed 14-mile light rail line would run along an existing freight corridor, linking neighborhoods from Bay Ridge to Jackson Heights. By connecting with up to 17 subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road, the IBX will offer a more direct, efficient alternative to the Manhattan-centric transit network. With a projected daily ridership of over 100,000, the IBX aims to reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and expand access to jobs and services for nearly a million New Yorkers – advancing a more equitable and connected city.
The IBX tour will provide APA members with an introduction to a key new transit service to better connect Brooklyn and Queens. Topics covered will include:
How the new system will promote sustainable transportation;
The connections between transit development and economic development;
How light rail is an efficient mode of transport for New Yorkers.
The tour will take place near the Brooklyn Army Terminal and 65th Street Railyard where the future Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) and Sunset Park transit station will be located.
The tour will be led by Jordon Smith, Planning Director at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York where he leads the planning efforts for the Interborough Express (IBX).
