La Marqueta Concept Plan
One of New York City’s original public markets, East Harlem’s La Marqueta was established in 1936 and hosted 300 merchants at its peak. In 2017, City Council, the EDC, and local community stakeholders engaged WXY to undertake stakeholder engagement process and a feasibility study to develop a framework for future investments at La Marqueta.
The La Marqueta planning process led to a host of design recommendations to transform seven lots under the MetroNorth viaduct into a mix of community-oriented public market, cultural neighborhood hub, workforce development anchor, and open space amenity. The concept design leverages the rich history of La Marqueta and embraces El Barrio’s local entrepreneurial energy.
