For Mentors:
Becoming a mentor allows you to give back to the profession by sharing your experiences and insights with the next generation of planners. It’s a fulfilling way to contribute to the growth of the profession while also honing your leadership and coaching skills. Mentorship is not just about guiding others; it’s also a chance to reflect on your own career and stay engaged with the latest trends and challenges in the field.

For Mentees:
Participating as a mentee provides you with the chance to learn from professionals in the New York Metro. Whether you're seeking guidance on career development, insights into best practices, or advice on specific projects, our mentorship program can connect you with a valuable resource help you advance in your career. It’s an invaluable opportunity to gain real-world knowledge and build lasting relationships within the planning community.

How It Works

The APA NYM Mentorship Program combines group events with customized mentoring relationships. Pairs are thoughtfully matched based on professional interests, goals, and location, ensuring each participant has the best opportunity to form a constructive and rewarding relationship. While APA NYM provides structure and support, the details of how and when mentors and mentees connect are flexible, giving each pair the freedom to shape their own experience.

Commitment

To foster meaningful growth and consistent communication, participants are expected to commit to at least once a month connecting with their mentor or mentee. These meetings can take place in person or virtually depending on what works best for the pair. Beyond the monthly check-in, participants are encouraged to stay in touch informally and take advantage of additional program activities. This consistent time investment helps ensure both mentors and mentees build strong, supportive, and productive relationships throughout the program year.

In addition to the monthly meeting, participants are encouraged to engage in other APA NYM events, conferences, webinars, and happy hours together. Shared participation in these activities strengthens relationships, broadens professional networks, and helps mentees experience the planning profession beyond one-on-one conversations. To build community within each cohort, the Mentorship Program also hosts formal events at the start and end of program, providing mentors and mentees a chance to celebrate progress, connect with peers, and expand their professional circles.
