Job Description

The Environmental Simulation Center (ESC) is a 25 year old independent, not-for-profit practicing planning and urban design organization whose mission is to improve the livability of communities through the application of information technology to community planning, design and development  . We have an opening for a part-time / full-time position (3 or 4 days a week). Our ideal candidate would have the following characteristics:

An educational background in urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture or related field with:

  • Ability to work effectively and complete tasks in a timely fashion under minimal supervision; self-manage multiple projects simultaneously and over extended periods of time
  • Familiarity with NYC Zoning Resolution; An understanding of basic zoning terms and rules like height & setback regulations, FAR, lot type, street widths and etc.
  • Ability to read architectural and engineering drawings, site plans, site surveys and zoning drawings
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Passionate about technology and applied use of IT to planning issues – willing to learn and apply new visualization and analysis software/tools to planning and urban design
  • Demonstrated interest in staying abreast the literature planning / urban design literature and existing and emerging IT tools
  • Strong technical skills in GIS & CAD software
  • Legally authorized to work in U.S.

Required Technical Skills

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Experience with ESRI ArcGIS, knowledge of 3D Analyst or Spatial Analyst is a plus
  • Familiarity with NYC Open Data; Working knowledge with Planometric GIS layers
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; 2D & 3D CAD drawing experience with ability to create site plan / axonometric drawings
  • Experience with 3D model creation & simulation
  • Experience with Shadow Modeling in 3D; Knowledge of 3D Studio or similar tools to perform renderings for shadow analysis. Experience with Daylighting / Solar Analysis tools are a plus
  • Experience with Trimble Sketchup; Ability to import/export CAD drawings to Sketchup for 3D Modeling and Context Model Creation
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator; Ability to create verifiable photomontages using 3D renderings and existing conditions photographs in Photoshop – Fine tuning CAD drawings in illustrator for presentation / official-legal documentation
  • Microsoft Office; Working knowledge of Excel for Floor Area Tables and Zoning Tables integration to GIS – Good graphical skills on power-point for public presentations and deliverables
  • Knowledge of CMS tools, Squarespace or similar is a plus
  • Managing and troubleshooting a small windows based network and IT systems.
