The New York City Council has a dedicated team of city planners, attorneys, and administrative staff that support Council Members and the Land Use Committee. The Land Use Division helps the committee Chairs conduct hearings, examines changes to land use regulations on behalf of Council Members, analyzes land use policies and engages in neighborhood planning.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Urban Designer will provide support reviewing projects seeking Council approval and assist with Council planning initiatives. Under the supervision of the Director and Deputy Directors of the Land Use Division, the Urban Designer will evaluate development proposals and rezonings and & nbsp;advise the Council on overall urban design and public realm concepts, objectives, and respond to the implications of urban design decisions. The person will develop design sketches, massings, renderings, models, and graphics to support and advise Council planning initiatives.
The candidate should possess the minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in Urban Design, Planning or Architecture (Master’s degree preferred) and 2-4 years of full time experience. The prospective candidate will be able to visually represent complex urban systems and conceptual design ideas and collaborate well with colleagues and key stakeholders to inform design decisions. Knowledge of GIS, 3D computer modeling and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud required. Also of extreme importance, prospective candidates must be able to exercise sound and careful judgement.
New York City Residency Required within 90 Days of Appointment.
