Job Description

The Meatpacking District Management Association (MDMA) seeks a qualified individual for the role of Urban Data and Analytics Intern (the position), supervised by the BID’s Manager for Operations and Economic Development.

This position would build out the BID’s economic and real estate analytics program, with a focus on data collection and database management. In addition, the position would include numerous opportunities to analyze and visualize data for both internal reporting and external publication.

Until a significant reduction in COVID-19 cases within New York City occurs and public health policy changes, a majority of this internship will occur remotely and interaction with supervisors will be done digitally. However, candidates should have familiarity with the Meatpacking District and be prepared to visit the neighborhood on occasion as necessary through the course of their duties. The position would require between 15 and 20 hours of work per week and be compensated at a rate of $20 per hour.

Duties included under this position would include but are not limited to:

  • In-situ primary data collection and systematic compilation of indirect data from third party sources such as the City of New York;
  • Organizing, cleaning, and manipulating quantitative data into customized data sets for BID use and analysis;
  • Performance of data analysis tasks, including for internal BID strategy and planning, as well as for external publication; and
  • The preparation of simple, appealing, and high-impact data visualizations for monthly and quarterly reporting.

 

Qualified candidates should have experience in research and data analysis including work with spatial data as well as open-source datasets. Candidates should further have an interest in urban development, real estate, informatics, geography or similar fields.

Qualified candidates are expected to have the following skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Strong organization skills including a high attention to detail
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative data reporting, analytics, and visualization
  • Spatial analysis including experience with geographic information systems (ArcGIS or QGIS preferred)
  • Experience with basic layout and graphic design
  • Candidates should make experience with other data analysis programs known (i.e. Tableau, R, or Python)
