Job Description

Sam Schwartz is seeking a Senior Transportation Engineer/Planner for our New York City office to lead a dynamic team that provides a range of planning and engineering services for a large airport redevelopment project, including managing landside operations, developing and implementing solutions during a long-term construction project, and serving as an extension of oversight agency staff. The engineer/planner will be part of an interdisciplinary team of consultants (planning, urban design, transportation engineering) both internally at Sam Schwartz and externally for the client.

Qualities include a solution-focused approach, with the ability to contribute significantly to conceptual design, problem solving, and various analyses; the ability to communicate persuasively and develop positive team dynamics; and the ability to understand and anticipate the larger client and business needs while successfully managing day to day project demands.

Primary Responsibilities

The selected individual will perform various tasks, such as:

  • Leading a team (internally and externally) to develop creative solutions to airport ground transportation challenges
  • Collaborating with and presenting to agency officials
  • Prioritizing, defining, and delegating workflow to various consultant teams
  • Identifying/foreseeing potential project delays and work opportunities
  • Working on-site at the airport at least 4 days per week
  • Understanding and interpreting data analytics results to drive development of recommendations and solutions

Skills and Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, representing interests of the client
  • Ability to interpret/synthesize data
  • Experience managing transportation projects, including management of staff, budgets, and clients
  • Fluency with standard transportation technical manuals and procedures including the MUTCD, AASHTO, HCM, CEQR Technical Manual
  • Familiarity with Synchro, VISSIM, and HCS with knowledge about program inputs, outputs, and limitations
  • Flexibility to work on-site and non-standard business hours occasionally


Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • At least 7 years of experience in the transportation engineering/planning field
  • Degree in transportation engineering, urban planning, or related field
  • PE and/or AICP certification
  • Must hold valid United States driver’s license
  • Experience working with public agencies on large-scale transportation infrastructure projects
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
