Job Description
For over 125 years, The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) has lifted up the voices of the people in the debates that shape New York’s built environment and led the way toward a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline. From saving Grand Central Terminal from destruction and preserving the lights of Times Square, to promoting innovative land use, zoning and historic preservation policy and legislation, MAS is at the forefront of New York’s most important campaigns to improve our city’s built environment.
MAS’s planning team is currently working on Greener Corridors for a More Resilient City, a research initiative that looks at reimagining New York City’s busiest arterial thoroughfares as more dynamic spaces that mitigate the effects of climate change, boost housing and commerce, and green the city. We are simultaneously researching planning solutions such as special environmental performance districts to mitigate the effects of sea level rise, increased precipitation, and extreme heat. MAS is also engaging with major land use proposals including neighborhood rezonings and large-scale development projects (e.g., Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Project, City of Yes, Jamaica Neighborhood Plan, One LIC) through detailed research, analysis, and public comments and testimony.

Contributing to technical studies, reports, presentations, building modeling, and mapping projects
Researching, drafting, and presenting planning and policy advocacy positions and testimony
Developing educational resources and tools
Assisting with MAS’s Planning and Preservation Committee meetings

The Planning Intern will be expected to help with meetings and events organized by MAS and/or partner organizations during and outside regular office hours. They can expect to gain experience engaging with a variety of audiences, including working professionals, City agencies, and elected officials. The internship will provide ample opportunities for technical skill development and new applications for mapping, research, analysis, and advocacy.
