Introduction to WXY:
WXY is an award-winning multi-disciplinary practice specializing in the realization of urban design, planning, and architectural solutions in challenging contexts. Focused on innovative approaches to public space, structures, and urban issues, the firm’s work engages both site-specific design and planning at multiple scales. The firm’s commissions are in collaboration with public agency, community-based, and private clients.
WXY planning engages a range of topics including strategic planning, community engagement, geospatial analysis, zoning and land use, economic development, transportation, sustainability, and resiliency. The role of intern requires a good knowledge of the New York City and regional planning context and an ability to perform research, analysis, and writing, develop visual materials, and engage in discussions related to the studio’s ongoing work and business development initiatives.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program with a focus on city and regional planning, geography, economics, economic development, real estate development, transportation planning, urban design, or a related field. Interns must be able to commit to 16-24 hours in the office per week, for 1-2 semesters.
•Strong data, analytical research, and mapping skills and ability to conduct in-depth research using NYC datasources, U.S. Census and ACS data & others
•Experience with design software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
•Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to successfully manage multiple projects
•Proficiency with ArcGIS to Adobe Illustrator workflow and experience producing effective maps
•Familiarity with programming languages (python) for data analysis and visualization
•Strong written and verbal communication skills, including facilitating workshops and presenting at publicmeetings
•Experience making effective presentations
•Experience and interest in one or more of the following areas:
oUsing forecasting, demographics analysis, and geospatial analysis techniques for school facilities planning (enrollment projections, building assessments, zone boundaries, assignment policy, andc ommunity engagement).
oBrownfield Opportunity Area assessments—interest in land-use planning, environmental review,including skills in economic and market trends analysis, existing conditions report production.
oTransportation planning with an emphasis on electrification and shared mobility
