Job Description

The City of Long Beach is seeking a planner in the Economic Development and Planning Department to staff a Planning Board, assist with the update to the Zoning Code, complete the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program Plan, assist with Community Engagement, Grant Development, and Administration.

The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
 Develops and reviews comprehensive land use plans and zoning code updates by researching and analyzing
data such as land use regulations, design controls, historic preservation, environmental laws, and any other
pertinent information which includes community engagement;
 Acts as a lead on planning projects by coordinating and directing activities such as data collection and
analysis, and project implementation;
 Prepares and provides oversight of the preparation of a variety of planning statistics, graphs, plans, designs,
charts, records, and reports;
 Plans and conducts field studies and surveys to collect demographic and other related planning data;
 Collects, tabulates, and analyzes data for use in connection with census statistics and population reports;
 Collects information and prepares documents for the Planning Board, site plan reviews, and community and
economic development activities;
 Coordinates grant and City-funded activities with other departments and agencies by participating in
meetings with department heads to discuss and evaluate the needs of their department and performs grant
writing and grant administration.
 Participates in studies involving research, investigation, and analysis of sociological, economic, and
environmental factors related to planning;
 Develops plans for various scale proposals involving landscape and architectural design aspects for the
City;
 May attend and participate in informational meetings and conferences with municipal officials providing
technical assistance and guidance with respect to planning projects and design.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. A Master’s degree in planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, geography, geology,
environmental studies, economic development, social sciences, transportation, or a related field and one (1)
year of experience in municipal, community or regional planning; OR
B. A Bachelor’s degree in planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, geography, geology, economics,
environmental studies, social sciences, transportation, or a related field and two (2) years of experience as
defined above.

Candidates will be required to take a Civil Service examination and be reachable on the resulting eligible list
pursuant to NYS Civil Service Law. Starting salary – $74,193.00, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The
City offers an excellent benefits package.
