Job Description

The Town of Westport is currently seeking applications for the full time position of Planner. Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Planning and Zoning, the Planner is responsible for a wide range of technical planning and zoning review tasks which support the department’s administration and maintenance of zoning programs, ordinances, codes, statutes, and regulations. The position may serve as the department’s initial contact with the public and other Town employees regarding departmental records or department functions. The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to 1) Acting as the Coordinator for Coastal Area Management (CAM) projects; 2) Acting as the Community Rating System (CRS) Coordinator for the Town; 3) Acting as the Affordable Housing Coordinator for the Town; 4) Preparing reports and researching issues for the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals and 5) When necessary, attending Planning and Zoning Commission, ZBA, POCD and other evening planning meetings.

The skills and knowledge required for this position would generally be acquired with Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or closely related field, and three (3) years work experience in a directly related field. An equivalent combination of work experience and education that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements. Must be familiar with computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and have the ability to learn specific software related to the Town of Westport and the Planning and Zoning department.
