Job Description

Ascendant Neighborhood Development (AND) is seeking a Neighborhood Development Intern to support AND’s affordable housing development projects, assist with historic preservation advocacy and education initiatives, and steward some communications and fundraising efforts. The Neighborhood Development Intern reports to AND’s Project Manager and Executive Director, and will work with all AND staff members on various project areas. 

We’re looking for an independent self-starter with strong writing and graphic communications skills and an interest in affordable housing, resiliency, sustainability, historic preservation, and/or neighborhood development in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. This is a great opportunity for a graduate student seeking experience in non-profit housing and neighborhood preservation and development.


-Assist Project Manager in preparing RFP/RFQ responses, funding applications, and grant reports

-Assist Design Initiatives Manager and staff in upcoming resident engagement planning and events

-Assist Senior Asset & Sustainability Manager with long term resiliency goals

-Help coordinate meetings and conference calls as needed in various project areas

-Prepare agendas for and record notes during meetings and conference calls

-Assist Executive Director in growing and publicizing AND’s historic preservation advocacy and education initiatives

-Design public materials, including flyers, press releases, infographics, and one-pagers

-Draft content for and update AND website, e-newsletter, and social media pages

-Assume other activities and responsibilities as needed


Required Qualifications / Skills

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

-Strong proofreading and editing skills

-Ability to manage tasks and time

-Experience with managing websites (WordPress)

-Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

-Proficiency in Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)

-Some knowledge/experience of affordable housing, historic preservation, and/or neighborhood planning in New York City


Helpful, but not required

-Experience in grant writing

-Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Mandarin)
