Job Description
PCAC Internship
Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC)
Location: 2 Broadway, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10004
PCAC was created by the New York State Legislature in 1981 to advise the MTA on behalf of riders. PCAC is the umbrella organization for the NYC Transit Riders Council, the Long Island Rail Road Commuter Council, and the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council. Our work primarily focuses on advocating on behalf of riders of the MTA’s subways, buses, Staten Island Railway, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad, working with a variety of stakeholders to affect change that will benefit riders and the transit system as a whole, and producing informed policy recommendations to hold the MTA accountable to riders. More information about the PCAC and its rider councils can be found at pcac.org.
We are seeking a graduate or undergraduate student in urban planning, transportation, public policy, or related fields to assist with various tasks and projects related to our work on behalf of MTA riders. Preference for students who have an interest in transit and the MTA network and who have an appreciation for innovative solutions, along with an understanding of the role of federal, state, and local financing for transit. This internship will be an excellent way to learn how the MTA and its operating agencies work. Interns will gain valuable experience in research, advocacy, and policy.
Responsibilities may include research, writing, data visualization, mapping, and attending and participating in public meetings and events. Past examples of work that PCAC Interns have worked on include our OMNYvate report on recommendations for OMNY rollout around the MTA system and a Funding Tool weighing options for the State to invest in the MTA as it faced a fiscal crisis in 2023.
Required:
- Passionate and knowledgeable about improving public transit for MTA riders, including riding transit yourself
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Ability to synthesize ideas clearly and concisely
- Excellent critical thinking, research, and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and conduct various tasks in a timely manner to meet deadlines
Desirable:
- Experience with research, policy and data analysis, or survey techniques is a plus
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Tableau, GIS, or other data visualization programs
- Student enrolled in urban planning, transportation, or public policy degree program
- Interest in budget, finance, and public policy, with a passion for advocacy
We are looking for a flexible weekly commitment of 15-20 hours with some in person requirements. Compensation is $17-20/hr. depending on the student’s experience and skills.
