Powerhouse Arts is a 170,000 sf nonprofit artist fabrication center on the Gowanus Canal, slated to open in the fall of 2022. The project will offer production space for woodworking, metalworking, ceramics, printmaking, and textile arts, as well as a 20,000-square-foot exhibition/performance/event space. The original site, built in 1904, served as the central power station for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. The redeveloped building, designed by Herzog and de Meuron, involved the gut rehab of the original Turbine Hall (once known as “the Batcave”), adjacent new construction on the original site of the power station’s Boiler House, and extensive infrastructure improvement, site work, and environmental remediation.
