2020 and 2021 have marked a time of reflection for many of us. In some way, we all have had to tackle the existential questions of how our careers contribute to or help dismantle the systems of injustice that have led to the generational and global levels of inequalities laid bare by the pandemic.

As planners of color, many of us were drawn to the field because of a desire to serve our communities. But is true service even possible in our current jobs? Is the alignment of purpose, joy, and work a reasonable goal? If not, how do we use our skills and knowledge outside of the mainstream planning ecosystem? What are the risks of stepping outside the industry? How do we even find what our purpose is and identify what brings us joy?

DivComm of the American Planning Association NY Metro Chapter presents a virtual discussion with Tat Chan, G Tiachristie, and Lisa Thompson, all planners who have found their purpose in and outside of the industry. They are pursuing radically subversive professions, finding joy and a sense of purpose in exciting and unexpected ways.
