Please join the Long Island Section for an afternoon and evening of East End-focused planning topic discussions and panels. A light dinner buffet will be served.

On October 25th, the APA Long Island Section will hold its annual East End Planning Conference!   This year the conference will be held at the Hotel Indigo East End located at 1830 West Main Street in Riverhead.  Hotel Indigo is centrally located on the East End on Route 25 near the eastern end of the Long Island Expressway and west of downtown Riverhead.  We look forward to an afternoon and evening of discussion on timely planning topics and networking. The program will include:

  • MOBILE WORKSHOP: Sutter and Sterlington Greenworks, Cutchogue (12:30pm – 3:00pm) {2.5 CM credits requestedSutter Greenworks and  Sterlington Greenworks generate a combined 6.2 MW of solar energy to the utility grid. The two sites contain nearly 30,000 PV modules, generating a combined 12 million kWh of electricity each year. This is enough energy to power nearly 1,000 typical homes, and offsets the equivalent of approximately 9,900 tons of CO2.  Tour will begin at Hotel Indigo at 12:30pm (participants will board coach bus and travel to/from the tour sites)

  • Session 1 (3:45pm – 5:15pm): Innovative and Alternative On-Site Wastewater Treatment Systems (I/A OWTS) Implementation in Suffolk County (1.5 CM credits requested)  The panel will provide a brief history of the creation of Suffolk County’s I/A OWTS program, the benefits of the systems, funding program, and the regulatory permitting requirements.  Representatives from the Town of Southampton and the Town of Easthampton will discuss how they administer their respective I/A OWTS mandate and funding programs.  Practical experiences with the County and town programs will be shared.
  • Dinner Buffet and Networking (5:15pm – 6:00pm) Sponsor Exhibits
  • Session 2 (6:00pm – 7:30pm): Managed Retreat in the Coastal Zone {1.5 CM credits requested} This panel discussion will include Lisa Liquori, AICP, Principal, Fine Arts & Sciences, LLC, Paul Beyer,  Director of Smart Growth. NYS Department of State (or Jaime Ethier, NYS DOS, Office of Planning, Development and Community Infrastructure or Jason Hellendrung, TetraTech), Alison Brancho, Ph.D., Director of Coastal Programs, The Nature Conservancy of Long Island, and Lena DeSantis, Managing Planner, Anchor QEA.  The panelists will describe the newly developed NYSDOS Transfer of Development Rights Initiative for Managed Retreat, the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery and other buyout programs, the National Peconic Estuary Program Climate Ready Assessment Project (underway), and Climate Resilience Adaptation projects made possible through strategic retreat.
