  • Tech Talk: Managing Uncertainty

    WHEN: Thursday, November 5, 2020 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join the APA NYM Technology Committee on Thursday at 6pm EST for a conversation with David Wasserman, AICP.

Uncertainty has always accompanied how we plan our infrastructure, but it has rarely been a core component of decision-making processes. A way forward for public works professionals to better pivot with a changing world is to engage more directly with uncertain futures through scenario-oriented design models for infrastructure planning and design. Scenario-oriented design provides professionals the ability to connect standardized datasets, metrics, and visualizations in one workflow so the connection between high-level design decisions and consequences can be measured and communicated at once.

Please RSVP to apa.techcomm@gmail.com for zoom details, RSVP will close at 5:30pm EST.

All are welcome, do not have to be a committee member to join!

  • Sixth Sense: Designing for sensors as a service during the COVID-19 health pandemic.

    WHEN: Tuesday, July 14, 2020 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Lorraine Liao and Rebecca Cook struck out to answer the question: in the time of Corona Virus how might we maintain a six foot distance without feeling self conscious and restricted from our daily activities? As part of the Urban Informatics II Course at Columbia University, the pair developed and beta-tested a wearable ultrasonic distance sensor that could help facilitate social distancing.

The APA Tech Committee is looking forward to hosting a conversation around this project. Rebecca and Lorraine will share a presentation on their findings, which will be followed by discussion. We are excited to see where the conversation goes, as the city and world begin to reopen in this new post-pandemic era.
