  • Big Data, Urban Data

    WHEN: Friday, March 31, 2017 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Big Data is the term being used to describe a wide spectrum of observational or “naturally-occurring” data generated through transactional, operational, planning and social activities that are not specifically designed for research. Due to the structure and access conditions associated with this data, research and analysis of this data becomes significantly complicated. New sources of Big Data are rapidly emerging as a result of technological, institutional, social, and business innovations.

The New York Metro chapter of the American Planning Association Student Representative Committee is hosting a gathering of urban data analysts and enthusiasts.  We shall discuss the emerging sources of Big Data, the use of this data in urban research, and the challenges that arise in this use. Join us for a series of presentations followed by a panel discussion surrounding the topic of big data and how it can be used to better understand the urban environment.

The Have You Met Newark? tour group will run a special, planners focused tour of Newark, New Jersey, for urban planning students in the New York Metro area and New Jersey. This event will be free to all students (travel not included). For those coming from Rutgers University, please contact Ryan Cote at cotedc5@gmail.com if you would like to come north on NJ Transit as a group.

If you are coming from New York please feel free to meet us at in World Trade Center Transit Hub by 12:20 PM. We will be located right outside the Apple store and will take the 20 min path ride to Newark where we will start our Newark exporation! And if you do prefer to meet us at the WTC please email Ryan at cotedc5@gmail.com so that you can be added to the list of travelers, and not forgotten!

This walking tour will visit various shops, restaurants, parks, the library and more. We will talk to various shop owners and other community leaders about how New Jersey’s largest city Newark is revitalizing itself through planning, and various other initiatives. It will be a great opportunity to experience this unique city, just a 25 minute NJT Train or PATH ride from Manhattan (seriously, thats it!).

The tour will conclude with an optional happy hour at a Newark bar.

Our tour will be led by Rutgers MRCP alum, Emily Manz, who founded Have You Met Newark? in 2012 with Antonio Valla. Both planners and residents of Newark, each has a deep love for the city’s history, present, and future and bring insights and fun to their tour. Manz, moved to NJ for her MA in City & Regional Planning at Rutgers in 2011. Moving to Newark in 2012 to work in economic development, she now lives in the Central Ward and works in consulting. Valla, a 2008 MA graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Design, moved to Newark’s Ironbound in 2012 to work in real estate and development. Both serve on a variety of boards in Newark.

For more information on the Have You Met Newark tour group visit their website.
