Once the “Times Square of the Bronx”,  with Laurence Frommer

When: Saturday, October 20,  2:00-4:00 PM
    Tickets: Member $20; Non-member: $30

The area where 149th Street intersects with Third, Willis, and Melrose Avenues was once known as “the Times Square of the Bronx” because it served as a hub for transportation, shopping, and cultural sites, including a grand 1910 opera house. Can the “Bronx Hub” be reborn in the 21st century as the center of a new “Downtown Bronx?” As we visit this crossroads of possibilities we will ask: “Why hasn’t the Hub seen as much new development as downtown Jamaica despite its greater proximity to Manhattan?” Are location and substantial infrastructure enough – or are there other important ingredients that must be present for successful redevelopment?

When: Sunday, September 16,  2:00-4:00 PM
    Tickets: Member $20; Non-member: $30

This Queens neighborhood seems poised for a major comeback. It’s on the cusp of recapturing some of what was lost to postwar suburbanization. A major transportation hub has become the nexus for numerous bus, subway and suburban commuter lines and air-train to JFK International Airport. New government office buildings are to be followed by a large new entertainment and retail complex, performing arts facilities, private sector office buildings, a central headquarters for the LIRR, a new CUNY Aviation Institute at York College intended to attract numerous air transit-related businesses to the area, and the first market-rate housing in almost a century.

  • Expert Panel: Community Perspectives on Anti-Displacement Strategies

    WHEN: Thursday, March 30, 2017 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us and a panel of distinguished experts for a night of discourse and debate on anti-displacement strategies in vulnerable communities. As affordability of housing throughout NYC declines, rent pressures in previously affordable low/moderate income neighborhoods have increased, resulting in widespread fear of the displacement of current residents and of major shifts in the socio-economic profiles of communities. In response, both local communities and the City of NY have been calling for and, in some instances, implementing anti-displacement strategies. This panel will consider: strategies communities have proposed; what strategies are being proposed and/or implemented by the City and State; an assessment of the success of these strategies to date; and what needs to be done in the future.

    Program:

Collective for Community, Culture and the Environment’s research and activities relating to displacement: Moderator: Eva Handhardt

ANHD, Furman Center and Pro-Publica’s research and maps on displacement risks and strategies:Presenter – Barika Williams, Deputy Director Association for Neighborhood Housing Developers (ANHD)

Panel discussion on community experiences relating to anti-displacement strategies in Chinatown in Manhattan, East New York in Brooklyn and Jerome Ave. in the Southwest Bronx.

    Panelists:

Cathy Dang, Executive Director, CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities

Humberto Martinez, Community Development Project Manager, Cypress Hills LDC

Sheila Garcia, Deputy Director of Housing Organizing, Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA)

The panel will take place on Thursday, March 30 at 6:00 pm at the Pratt Institute at 144 West 14th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue.
