Each Spring Nanette Bourne and Nancy Doon, of sponsor firms Sam Schwartz Engineering and
VHB, respectively, and Board Members of Bridges to Community (BTC) lead a group of
business leaders to work on a construction project in Nicaragua. Several people from other APA
New York Metro Chapter sponsor firms including AKRF, LANGAN and WSP have joined them
on previous trips. Projects are selected by the community and the group works side by side with
the people who will benefit from the project.

This coming trip is scheduled for Nicaragua from March 17 – March 24, 2018.  The project will be the construction of a simple and safe concrete block house for a family living in extremely substandard conditions. The foundation will be dug on day one, and the group will work with professional masons to complete the house by the end of the week. A “housewarming” celebration will be held with the family and the community at the end of the week.

The house will be built in a rural village about 2 hours from the capital city of
Managua. Volunteers fly into Managua and then travel with BTC staff to the village where
dormitory style housing is provided to the group. There will be 15-20 volunteers working side by
side with bilingual BTC staff and Nicaraguan masons. The work is for all ages and abilities. It
does not require experience or an ability to speak Spanish. All meals will be provided.

The cost is $1,395 for food and lodging and with airfare, the projected total is $1,900-$2,000. All
costs are tax deductible. More information can be found in the attached brochure and this
video about the business leaders trip
