    6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The American Planning Association’s New York Metro Chapter Economic Development Committee is pleased to invite you to the NYC Roundtable on COVID-19’s Impact for the Retail and Restaurant Industries. Part II.  This is in follow-up to our event in June, where we will build upon the previous conversation and highlight the creative strategies retailers and restaurateurs use to stay open.  Please join us on Wednesday, September 30th!

New York City Roundtable: COVID-19 Impacts for the Retail/Restaurant Industries – Part II

Purpose: Discuss the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in NYC with a particular focus on the consequences for the City’s retail/restaurant industries. In addition to following up on New York’s recovery initiatives, the discussion will highlight experiences of local business owners, explore changes in the real estate market, examine the continuing financial impact, and touch upon the future of urban planning. We had the part 1 of this event in June and are excited to bring our guests along for a follow up discussion.

Event Description: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to weigh heavily on the economy of the United States, state and local jurisdictions are challenged to deal with the economic consequences without help from the federal government. New York City’s retail and restaurant industries have deployed creative strategies to stay open during this period, while the City explores long-term borrowing options to fund critical government operations and projects. The New York Metro Chapter of the American Planning Association Economic Development Committee, brings together a range of experts to provide insight on the economic toll the virus has inflicted on the City and what lies ahead in the struggle for recovery.

  • APA EventHindsight Conference 2020

    WHEN:
    Thursday, November 12, 2020 - Friday, November 13, 2020
    8:00 am - 6:00 pm

    About Hindsight 2020:

Hindsight Conference is an all-day conference in New York City on urban planning through an equity lens. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified our nation’s structural inequities, as evident in racial disparities in deaths and access to care, rise in income inequality, and layered on top, police brutality against Black lives. This year’s conference calls for planners and policy-makers to channel our public health roots and re-center environmental justice.

Asserting our vision for the future is necessary to prevent others from taking advantage of crisis to impose their ideologies. Black and Indigenous People of Color; People with Disabilities; Queer, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Individuals; and other historically marginalized groups, must lead the road to recovery.

Through two half days of virtual workshops, exhibits,  and panels we challenge attendees to build a future where we all not just survive, but more importantly, thrive. We must strengthen our connections to our ancestral struggles, our historic and present-day movements, and one another, in order to build our health and our future.

The events of 2020 have exposed critical issues of social justice and health equity that are embedded within the built environment. It is clear that our professions face a broad range of challenges for the future. Are planners, architects, and landscape architects equipped to make measurable and positive change?

This multi-disciplinary conference seeks to examine how current events have shaped Public Health, Transportation, and Technology, and how the allied professions can aid our communities in moving forward.. We will explore how these components of society are understood at the neighborhood level all the way to the global scale, because now more than ever each discipline must work to address the social and environmental reparations for the future at all scales. The conference will engage government officials, practitioners, and researchers in discussions about the relationships between scales and the methods of practice used across our professions.

  • PARK(ing) Day

    WHEN:
    Thursday, September 17, 2020
    2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

    WHERE:
West End Avenue between 88-95th Streets , NY New York

When: Thursday, September 17, 2:00pm-6:00 pm
Location: West End Avenue between 88-95th Streets

PARK(ing) Day is an annual international event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into temporary miniature parks, or parklets. The mission of the event is to call attention to the importance of urban open space, generate a dialogue about landscape architecture and the benefits of public green space, and improving the quality of urban human habitat.  This year the APA Transportation Committee is teaming up with an extraordinarily diverse group of partners to take over the already open street of West End Avenue. We will be taking over not just parking spaces but at least 5 whole BLOCKS! Activities and stations will be dispersed to allow for proper physical distancing but will be connected with a common goal – to celebrate streets for people and connections. We need to collectively think of new ways to adapt our street infrastructure and public space for today and tomorrow’s needs.

Join us on September 17 to share ideas for re-envisioning our street and providing connections with the people who use these public spaces. If you would like be a volunteer for PARK(ing) Day, please sign-up at the link HERE.

    WHEN:
    Tuesday, July 14, 2020
    5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Lorraine Liao and Rebecca Cook struck out to answer the question: in the time of Corona Virus how might we maintain a six foot distance without feeling self conscious and restricted from our daily activities? As part of the Urban Informatics II Course at Columbia University, the pair developed and beta-tested a wearable ultrasonic distance sensor that could help facilitate social distancing.

The APA Tech Committee is looking forward to hosting a conversation around this project. Rebecca and Lorraine will share a presentation on their findings, which will be followed by discussion. We are excited to see where the conversation goes, as the city and world begin to reopen in this new post-pandemic era.
