Practical Applications of Pedestrian Modeling

Pedestrian modeling is an increasingly important tool in transportation planning and urban design. It helps planners and engineers understand how people move through streets, transit stations, bridges, and public spaces, test design alternatives, and evaluate safety, capacity, and comfort before projects are built.

Join the APA-NY Metro Chapter Transportation Committee for a virtual session focused on real-world applications of pedestrian modeling. The program will begin with a brief overview from NYC DOT on what pedestrian modeling is and how it is being rolled out in New York City.

Presenters will then showcase macro-, meso-, and micro-level approaches using tools including Urban Network Analysis (UNA), Bentley Legion and Pathfinder, PTV Viswalk, and Space Syntax. Through applied case studies, speakers will demonstrate how these platforms inform planning, design, and operational decisions across a range of project types.

The session will conclude with audience Q&A.

Presenters:

  • Karissa Lidstrand, Planning Lead at NYC Department of Transportation

  • Andres Sevtsuk, Director of City Form Lab and Head of City Design and Development Group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

  • Dong Gao, PMP, PE, PTOE, AICP, Project Manager at HNTB

  • Elizabeth Jule Gladoun, PE, Transportation Operations Lead at VHB

  • Sam Sklar, WEDG, Senior Transportation Planner at Systematica
