American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

APA's institute is the American Institute of Certified Planners. Members of AICP must meet experience qualifications and pass the certification exam. In addition to administering the examination, AICP accredits academic planning programs, maintains the professional code of ethics, and publishes Planners Casebook quarterly. A Commission governs the AICP.

Certification Maintenance

In 2008, APA/AICP implemented a Certification Maintenance (CM) program that required AICPs to earn 32 CM credits within a two-year reporting period. Following are relevant comments and recommendations submitted by the New York Metro Chapter and others on the CM program.

National AICP Exams

To become a certified planner and use the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) designation, one must be a current member of the American Planning Association, submit an application meeting certain education and experience requirements, pass an examination, and be a fully paid member of APA and AICP.

The AICP exam is currently offered twice per year, in the fall and spring. The testing window for the two exam periods are posted on the APA's website at http://www.planning.org/certification/ . The exam is offered electronically at testing sites throughout the NY metro area that are disclosed upon acceptance of your AICP application.

Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners

Election to Fellow in AICP (FAICP) is one of the highest honors that the American Institute of Certified Planners bestows upon a member. This honor recognizes the achievements of the planner as an individual, elevating the Fellow before the public and the profession as a model planner with significant contributions to planning and society. Fellowship is granted to planners who have been members of AICP and have achieved excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, public/community service and leadership.

Fellows are members of the College of Fellows (COF). The COF is primarily concerned with mentorship and future advancement of the profession of planning. As outstanding professionals in the field of planning, Fellows address student organizations and/or state APA conferences or professional development programs.
